Active travel
Active travel is a way of making journeys that are physically active, such as walking, wheeling, or cycling, meaning to put some physical energy into it. This doesn’t mean your 10-mile commute – but it could be the short journeys you do every day; to the shops, journey to school or to see friends for example.
Nearly 60% of all car journeys are under 5 miles – many of these could be done in different, more healthy and sustainable ways.
Active travel has many different benefits, not only for you but our communities also.
By reducing the number of cars making short journeys we can increase road safety and reduce air and noise pollution for residents.
When you walk and cycle short journeys you increase physical activity levels, this not only benefits your physical health but boosts your mental health also.

Social prescribing
Social prescribing is when a health professional, such as a GP, nurse or carer refers a patient to non-clinical services and activities. This might include crafts, volunteering, or other activities.
Here at The Active Way, we offer social prescribing into a range active travel activities, to help people become more active in their daily lives. This could be to try something new, discover new ways of getting around or setting yourself a goal to replace inactive ways of getting around.
We hope this will address multiple problems people face from long term health conditions and aspects of isolation or anxiety. We hope we can build confidence, resilience and give everyone the opportunity to try something and meet new people.
